Autumn Litters Update

For the last four weeks, we have been suffering the effects of the Yosemite Rim Fire here at our micro-farm. Three weeks ago, the fire reached a mere 7 miles away from our home and we were under advisory evacuation notice. When you live right next to a National Forest, 7 miles isn’t far. The fire has destroyed 253,332 acres and is currently 80% contained. All evacuation notices were lifted about two weeks ago. The thick, dangerous smoke in the air is still a huge health concern even this morning.

Our family and our animals are safe, however, our rabbits have suffered fright and stress from this disaster and the smoke that still lingers heavy here. Two of the three does we bred right before the fire began have not had their litters as expected. Khaleesi (chestnut doe) did not show any signs of pregnancy, but Philidelphia (REW doe) did. Philidelphia demonstrated multiple signs of pregnancy including pulling fur for a nest, but did not kindle (give birth) within the expected 31-36 days. This leads me to believe that Philidelphia has somehow aborted or absorbed her impending litter. Great stress can often lead to this sort of reaction in rabbits.

With these unexpected changes in the beginning of our breeding season, I wanted to update you with new kindle dates for our does and their autumn litters. We are still waiting for Blackberry’s litter due this Sunday. Both Khaleesi and Philidelphia were re-bred to their same matches last week. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the continuing smoke pollution does not effect our rabbits and their litters further.

  1. Fires are terrible. We’ve had so many devastating ones around Colorado this summer. They are destructive in ways you don’t even consider. Glad to hear you were spared from more harm than you were. Looking forward to reading new baby bunny news soon!
